To further illustrate I am an old man now, here is a link showing the cost of living in 1971, and a few Historical events of the year of my birth. Some highlights include:
- The cost of a gallon of gas 40 cents.
- The average home would set you back $25,250, or if you were looking to rent, you'd have to pay $150/month.
- This had to be budgeted on the average yearly income of $10,600.
- The Voting age was lowered to 18.
- Women can now vote in Switzerland. (This honestly didn't happen until 1971??!!??!!)
- The Walt Disney Resort in Florida opens. (I am dumbfounded that I was born the same year that Walt Disney World opened. But I remember as a kid, how awestruck people were with Epcot Center when it opened.)
- And finally, my two favorite: Cigarette Ads stopped running on TV in 1971 and Fed Ex was started. I feel so archaic to think that people still watched cigarette ads and that Fed Ex was a novelty the same year I was born.
